I love it when I can tick off two tasks in one go – and on this occasion it was baking for the school cake stall and writing an article about a recipe using orange. Love it!
So after a bit of recipe rifling I found a lovely orange and poppyseed loafcake which I promptly adapted into little cakes for little hands. I also found the perfect vehicle for the rather retro orange and lemon jelly decorations I found in Morrisons recently that took me straight back to childhood memories of my mum’s baking cupboard.
The sponge is super light and flecked with orange zest and poppy seeds – perfect un-frosted for lunchboxes.
The icing i’ve used is a cross between glace and butter icing – really nice to spread on and gives a great finish.

I remember the bake sales we used to have at school, way back when… these look far nicer than anything we sold! (Mostly sunken fairy cakes with day-glo pink icing, and chocolate cornflake cakes.) Orange & poppy seed is such a lovely combo.

The standard is frighteningly high these days… any excuse for the west london mums to compete 😉

our schools dont allow home baking stalls, council rules as you dont know where the product has originated. But these sound very nice

These look lovely. I had a look at the recipe on I Feel Orange, but the ingredients for the icing are not there. Could you post them please? I’m intrigued by a cross between glace and buttercream. Thanks.

Eek well spotted Monica – I don’t know why those ingredients have been missed out – I’ll get the folks at I Feel Orange to update it asap 🙂
