Do your kids eat fish? Not just fish fingers but chunky fillets of proper fish? In our house it depends how I present it. The boys adore fish fingers, and on the occasions i’ve made them myself like these Asian inspired ones they loved them. They also really like salmon fillets when I top them with a crunchy pesto crust.
So I was interested to see how they’d cope with plain fillets of fish baked in a simple sauce.
Simply add fish! are a new range of three fresh sauces that they say have been developed with children’s tastes in mind. This means there are three very mild flavours to choose from:
- Lovely lemon
- Creamy herb
- Touch of tomato
Our verdict
Preparation: Cooking them is a cinch. Just pop some fish fillets in an oven dish, pour the sauce over and bake in the oven. On one occasion I served them up with vegetables and mashed potato to mop up the sauce, and on another I presented them with rice.
Taste: They’re very mild and creamy – the sauce is quite thick so coats the fish well. I think the mildness perhaps lets the overall flavour down a bit as my kids actually favour stronger tastes like pesto and sun-dried tomatoes. They gave it a try but were a bit put off by the bland look and flavour of the dish. I really enjoyed all three sauces as I struggle a bit with fish and this was a really easy way to eat it.
Overall verdict: Fabulously easy weeknight supper idea, but sadly not one my boys were bowled over by. I think they’d work well on younger toddlers who are being introduced to eating fish.
