I thought it’d be useful to start keeping a track of which fruit and vegetables are in season here on my blog every month to help inspire everyone from an ingredient point of view, rather than always starting with a recipe. Seasonal foods are often cheaper and definitely taste better, so will always add that extra bit of magic to your cooking.

Inside the January kitchen…
What kind of meals do you love cooking at this time of year? Winter vegetables always have me craving thick and creamy soups for dunking hunks of buttered bread into, slow cooker stews served up with mounds of fluffy jewelled couscous or just simply roasted vegetables with olive oil, sea salt flakes and a scattering of dried rosemary or sage.
January is also the time of new beginnings and freshening up the menu, so on the fruit front I tend to go for zingy tropical numbers like pineapple and passion fruit whizzed into energising smoothies. I always like to boil up a batch of Seville Orange marmalade at this time of year too.
Here’s a selection of recipes using January’s seasonal ingredients from my some of my favourite bloggers to help you plan some feasts this month:
Mini Caramelised Rhubarb No Bake Cheesecakes – Maison Cupcake
Mexican Sweet Potato and Puy Lentil Mole – Tinned Tomatoes
Baby Carrots with Parmesan, Roasted Kale and Black Sesame – Franglais Kitchen
Blood Orange Curd – Fuss Free Flavours
Beetroot and Kale Soup with Almond Crumble – Ren Behan
What do you feel like cooking this month? I’m definitely going to try and make some blood orange curd in my new Thermocook gadget, i’ll roast some cauliflower and blitz it into a creamy soup and i’ve also got some puff pastry sheets in the fridge which I fancy turning into some roasted parsnip and mushroom tarts… watch this space for more recipe action this month!

Blog oranges, passion fruit and pomegranate ares some of my favorite things and your list has got me thinking about what I could do with the three of them together…
Katie Bryson says
Sounds like an exciting plan Bintu… nothing finer than a bright and zingy fruit combo during these bleak winter months!
Bintu | Recipes From A Pantry says
Erm blood oranges (not blog oranges). 😀

One track mind eh Bintu?!

I am looking forward to both blood and Seville oranges. Love eating seasonally and there is so much to look forward to
Katie Bryson says
You’re so right Helen, it’s a lovely way to eat.

Absolutely love this idea! Seasonal fruits and veggies always taste so much better, and this is a great place to come for some seasonal inspiration!
Katie Bryson says
Thanks Becca, it’s really helped cheer up my January.

I’ve bookmarked the link for the Mole, and I shall definitely be trying that out. Made vegan Feijoada today, and I’m trying to leave behind my staple dishes for more veggie variety in our house. Will keep an eye out for more recipes 🙂
Katie Bryson says
That’s good Emma… it’s good to branch out a bit isn’t it. We get easily stuck in a rut cooking the same old things, especially with kids to feed!

I am with you Katie, I am going to make blood orange curd in my Thermocook too, as I want to try out lots of seasonal dishes this month. This is a great idea for an inspiring post!
Katie Bryson says
Aw thanks Laura!

I’ve been pondering orange curd lately too, probably clementine as there are so many of them in the shops. Blood orange would be AMAZING!
