A warming breakfast of gently spiced fruity porridge topped with slices of apple and a drizzle of maple syrup gets your day off to an effortlessly healthy start.
I’ve created this breakfast that’s free of refined sugar as part of the Bloggers V Sugar campaign being run by Benenden. It’s all too easy to fill the boys with sugary cereals and toast spread with Nutella, so I thought this naturally sweetened porridge would be a fantastic alternative to get the whole family powered up for the day ahead. It’s still cold and wintery up here in the far North of England, so we need all the help we can get!
Spiced Apple and Maple Porridge
Serves 2
Ingredients
60g porridge oats
1/4 tsp all-spice
1 apple
250ml milk
250ml water
To serve
1 apple, cored and thinly sliced
maple syrup to drizzle
Method
- Put the porridge oats, all-spice, grated apple, milk and water into a saucepan and stir over a gentle heat for 5-10 mins until thickened and bubbling. Remove from the heat.
- Pour into two bowls and top with some sliced apple and a drizzle of maple syrup.

I noticed that grating apples thinly and mixing it into porridge makes it sweet enough for my children. They don’t even ask for extra honey or maple syrup. I also add some ground nuts (walnuts, cashews, almonds, …). I assume that bowl of porridge is perfect for smuggling as many nutrients as possible. In this way they get omega-3 fatty acids for brain stimulation, some of B-group vitamins for energy and various minerals.

Oh lovely, we always have maple syrup on our porridge, it’s so good. Love the addition of the apples.

Thanks Janice… the apples get some extra fibre in there and a bit of sweetness too!

I love oats porridge and have it for breakfast almost everyday. I also really like adding apples with cinnamon, but instead I add grated apples

This sounds like a filling and healthy way to start the day. Being American I *have* to have maple syrup on my porridge and the apples just add to the goodness.
Katie Bryson says
Heheh Kellie, yep it’s in your DNA really isn’t it!
