I’ve been trying out a range of frozen vegetarian foods by Goodlife this week. Goodlife Foods produce frozen, vegetable based products that they say “make the vegetables the star of the show” and rather brilliantly they only use natural ingredients.
Being a busy family cook with a vegetarian husband to feed, I love veggie meals I can quickly grab out of the freezer and shove in the oven – especially if the boys and I are having a meat-based meal. I’d not come across this range before, so I was keen to get stuck in. I sometimes find vegetable based convenience food to be a bit on the bland side, so I was hoping these might be different.
What did we try?
I chose the three products available at my nearest branch of Waitrose, and that was the Mushroom & Spinach Kievs, Picador Parsnip and Carrot Nut Burgers with Crunchy Cashews and the Spice Veg Bean Burgers. I loved the jolly packaging which really stood out from the other vegetarian products in the freezer section.
Mushroom & Spinach Kiev with a Creamy Garlic and Cheese Sauce
Our verdict: Close textured, bold flavours, crispy coating and ultra pleasing cheesy garlic sauce that oozed out of the middle when I cut into them – this really feels like a substantial meal. I served it up with a green leaf salad and a posh herby mix of wheatberries and lentils that caught my eye in Waitrose. Oh how I love meandering around the aisles at Waitrose looking at all the posh food – it’s just as well it’s a 30 minutes drive away or I’d be emptying my bank account there far too often!

Picador Parsnip and Carrot Nut Burgers
Our verdict: These aren’t particularly good looking burgers, but I was super impressed with the texture and flavour. The cashews give the burgers a super crunchy texture, which I really appreciate as I find a lot of veggie burgers a bit on the sappy side. I also loved the sweetness from the parsnip and carrot too which went brilliantly served up in seeded flatbreads with tomato salsa, lettuce and peppers. Oh yes, they’re also Vegan friendly!

Spicy Veg Bean Burgers
Our verdict: Matthew absolutely loves a hearty burger and these really fit the bill coz they’re whopping! Wonderful in a soft and buttery brioche roll with mayo, salad and pickles, the chipotle chilli gives them a very pleasing kick. I think they’re great value given their size, and will definitely be buying them again. These are also suitable for Vegans.

Overall verdict
If you’re trying to cut down on the amount of meat you’re eating, this is a fantastically tasty range to try out on your family. It’s great to see a new brand on the scene who clearly care about the quality of their products, and have developed a range with genuinely lovely flavour combinations with a much appreciated emphasis on texture too which can often be neglected in vegetarian/vegan foods. I also really want to try the other new items recently added to the range – French Bean & Spinach Sausages with Wensleydale Cheese and the Falafel with Chickpea, Cumin & Coriander both sound delicious!

These products sound perfect for me! I love having frozen vegan burgers in the freezer for those days when I don’t feel like cooking. Love that they’re healthy and packed with veggies. The mushroom spinach kievs sound amazing 😀

I bought the range last week and was really impressed by both “burgers” taste and texture and will definitely be putting them in my basket again. I don’t think either tasted great in a brioche bun while the rest of family ate their cows but they were really special on their own with a tangy salad and I felt I had the best supper. I scoffed the rest for like ch the next day.
We had the Kievs tonight and I wasn’t as enthusiastic and much preferred a similar product from a well know grocer with an m and an s in their name.

The burgers are my favourite too Claire…
